Long lining has so many applications in the health and wellbeing of the horse, from exercise, training, building confidence and creating variety in their day. It has greater variety that lunging but it is not as easy as it looks. Don't make the mistake of clipping on and holding on with hope as your water ski behing yoru horse down the paccock or across the school.
Being able to long-line was once essential to training and developing equines. However, it differs from everything else a horse ever does with you, be in front not alongside, turn out not in, and meet challenges first. To avoid the dangers of “water skiing” across the paddock or sand school help your equine to accept the lines and even deal calmly with the rope being tangled around their legs. Long lining is needed to complete the shaping plan for trust problem solving and confidence, returning to riding and starting any young horse. From yearlings to mature horses, long lining can be a great tool to have in their toolbox of skills even if you have never don it before.
