Donkeys
and
Mules
Are donkeys and mules different to horses?

Yes and No. Yes, there are, of course, physical differences and different husbandry requirements. But when it comes to training and handling the answer is no, but not in the way you think. There is an old saying, “you can tell a horse what to do, you should ask a donkey and negotiate with a mule.” This is so true, and I believe we should be negotiating with all three. There is another saying, “If you can train a horse, you can train a horse. If you can train a mule you can train anything.” To train all three, I use the science of behaviour; all my work and resources are aimed at the mule level of training. The difference between horses and mules is that people can force horses to do what is required, whereas, with donkeys, mules and hinnies, you need to know the species differences, use the science of behaviour and follow a clear plan.
Wherever you are in the world you can get support and guidance for your journey with your horse, donkeys or mule.
The video and audio track below explain how I believe we should train donkeys and mules and why I say training mules is the gold standard.

All my other resources, ebooks, shaping plans, online courses, and coaching calls all work the same way regardless of whether you have donkeys, mules or horses.
Listen to this audio of Ben talking about choosing methods to work with donkeys and mules.
"I followed the beginners and the advanced for behaviour. I practise with my horse (a failed horse in trotting races before I bought him) and two foster donkeys from Zeist. The donkeys were very shy. With the lessons from Ben Hart I am able to drive now with one of the donkeys. With the horse JOY and donkey LOTTE, I make so much fun. Especially the horse is more open now and relaxed. It is a wonder!"

I went to a day clinic with Ben, he was telling us about his 6 Steps to being better with our horses.
Really helpful, fun and knowledgable horseperson.
The 6 steps were well thought out and fit in well to everyday interaction with your horse, donkey or mule.
Highly recommend. Ruth Drake-Chapman
